What’s up with all the movie remakes, seriously?

I just watched the remake of Poltergeist, not by choice. I was pinned down by a sick 4 year old and couldn’t change the channel.

I have four words to say about it.

What a Let Down.

I saw the original movie during a pre screening when I was 12. They didn’t advertised the movie. I had no clue what it was about, but someone gave me a free pass in the mall and I had nothing better to do.

I have to say, I loved it. I brought my family back to the theater to watch it as well as my friends. So did all the others who got to see it for free. After that the movie went viral. Which meant a lot back in the pre-internet and twitter days. Just from the word of mouth,  the movie became an instant success over night.

Then they disgraced the movie by making a terrible remake of it. I swear in some scenes you can tell the actors were awestruck they were in the remake of such a legendary movie or just having fun instead of acting serious.

Which brings me to the point of this post, what’s up with remaking great movies and badly I like to add?

Poltergeist is just one in many remakes in the past couple of years. I have to admit, I try not to watch them, because I already know they won’t ever live up to the original just from the commercial and track record. I can’t recall a single one doing good in the book office. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

Are they resorting to remakes because original movie ideas have dried up? I think not. My friend a screen writer mentions daily, there are tons of movie scripts from budding artist they can pick from.

Are they trying to appeal to the adults who were kids when the original movie came out hoping they rush to watch it. Possibly. It is well known movie studios aren’t willing to take chances with no name movie ideas. They want something with a built-in audience such as popular book series, comic book heroes or TV shows (Star trek). However, if that is the case, why do they keep making rotten tomato remakes that bomb in the box offices and never recoup production costs. (Maybe a tax write off?)

Personally I think the studios are the ones without ideas. Everything is changing with personal surround sounds, 4K, HD, video on demand, Netflix, Amazon, etc… People don’t need to go to a theater to watch movies. They can do it at home.

But the movie studios are stuck in the 80’s old way of thinking.  Lets make a block buster so we can entice people to pay the high price movie ticket and earn larger profits. However, if they were smart about it, which they aren’t, they can use streaming videos to their advantage. How about watching Star Wars on demand the day it comes out. I’d pay 10 maybe even 20 dollars to see that instead of dealing with finding a babysitter and annoying people talking during the movie.

Yeah, yeah I know. What about piracy? Its psychology 101. People are inevitably lazy. They aren’t going to want to spend hours downloading a badly recorded pirated version when they can easily watch the original for a reasonable price.

Okay, but what about the movie theaters? This will kill them. Not necessarily. There are still the people who like to see movies on the big screen. If they make it a better experience than at home, then they can actually increase sales, such as offer daycare. booth style stadium seating (think Las Vegas), maybe offer dinners they can eat before watching the movie. I go to a movie like that, even to see an old movie. The ultimate casual date night.

What do you think?

The Infinite Sea Book Review

The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2)

Book Overview

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Book Review

The book picks up where the first ends. Cassie and the others are holed up in a hotel close to the late Camp Haven. Evan is still MIA and believed dead. But Cassie doesn’t give up hope on him. Ben is badly injured so they can’t travel. So Ringer goes off on her own to locate a better place to hide.

Quickly it turns bad. Teacup follows her and she shoots the poor girl. They are captured and taken to a new Camp Haven while Evan claws his way to Cassie, losing his upgrades in the process. One of the Others, Grace, follows him and leads the Others to them.

Most of the book follows Ringers story at the camp with her being physically upgraded like the others so they can use her as a spy to find Evan.

I gave it 2 stars.

I wasn’t pulled into this story as the previous one. I found myself skimming to get through some of the constant monologing. At some points I thought the character Ringer’s story mimicked Cassie’s in book 1. When the story ended I felt as if the it had been cut off not in a good suspenseful way. Rather big important chunks left out of the story. Specially Evan and why the others are slowly killing humans instead of just wiping them out.

Alien apocalyptic: 5th Wave Book Review

Okay so I’m a little behind in my reading. I finally finished reading…

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave #1)

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Book Review

It’s start with 16 year old Cassie living alone in the woods by herself after the 4th alien attack (wave) hit earth. Over 7 billion people are dead. The survivors are scattered around the world. She is one of them. She stays hidden or risks being killed by the Others, which she isn’t sure who they are. They’re supposed to look just like humans. So she trusts no one, especially the military who killed her father and tried to kill her.

She decides to leave the forest and go save her 5 year old brother, Sam, from the military who took him. In the process she is shot and rescued by one of the Others. This is where the story parallels Twilight in a way. Her hunter, Evan,  young, hot, very strong and fast. Despite his mission to kill humans, saves Cassie, because he fallen for her.

But if you’re looking for a slow love story between them, you’re out of luck. The book skips around to other point of views so you get a sense of whats happening in the world beside Cassie holed up in a cabin with Evan.

I give it 4 stars.

I felt the characterization of Cassie and Ben were good and kept me interested, although neither of them have unique voices. They sound the same. Sam sounded too old for a five year old. My son is four, he hangs out with my neighbors son who is 5. They take him hunting on the weekends, but even so, I couldn’t imagine him thinking, let alone acting as mature as Sam. He sounded closer to 7 or 8. And whats up with all the girls wanting to slap the guys. (My personal pet peeve stereotyping girls as being girly girls.) I hate to break it to you Rick, but not all girls resort to sissy slapping when they get frustrated and mad at a guy. Some punch, some just roll their eyes and walk away and the list goes on.  (just to the  name a few responses).

If you like reading sci-fi’s or post apocalypse stories, this book is worth reading.

Evangeline (A Dark Faerie Tale, #0.5)

by Alexia Purdy

Book Overview

The Land of Faerie is calling.
There are places unknown, magic lures you in and love spans lifetimes.
Don’t resist. It’s in the blood…

Evangeline is a short story prequel to Ever Shade.

Book Review

I came across this book on Amazon Free Fantasy stories. I decided to give it a try, being it was a short story and I didn’t have to commit too much of my time before deciding whether or not I want to read the series. Sadly my first impression wasn’t that good, because:

The story was written in third person omniscient, which I’m not a huge fan of reading. It can become difficult to follow. Evangeline was no exception. The author didn’t have any transitions between the two POV’s Evangeline and her sister, Jade. She switched POV mid-paragraphs. So most of the time I had to re-read paragraphs to figure out who was speaking, taking me out of the story.

Next, the first couple of chapters the author spent a lot of time narrating and explaining backstory about the sisters and their powers instead of letting it unfold naturally with the story. However, she left off the most important part–character development.

The sisters characters were flat and hard to connect too. They had no personality. No unique characteristics. I didn’t even really know what they looked like, except Evangeline had black hair and brown eyes.

If that wasn’t bad enough, just as I finally felt the story was getting interesting when Evangeline met Jack, the story fast forwards to her leaving Jade to spend time with him, whom she had been dating for awhile and loved. Then the next chapter jumped again where she was living in Faerie Land.

I gave it 2 stars.

Despite my issue with third person omniscient, narrating backstory and flat characters, it had a potential. If the author had written in the interactions between Jack and Evangeline as well as Jade and the fairy king the story and the characters could’ve became interesting. However it didn’t.  It felt rushed and confusing instead.

Perhaps if you were reading the story, after have read book 1 it may have been more interesting. But starting with this book only turns you off from the series as it did with me.

Reminder: Today is the last day to download The Zeuorian Awakening Free on Amazon Kindle.

Fifty Shades Darker Review

I figure with the pending release of Fifty Shades Darker movie February 2017, I would finally read the book. I bought it after reading the first one, but it didn’t grab me right away so I put it down.

Official Book Overview

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven, and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront her anger and envy of the women who came before her and make the most important decision of her life.

Erotic, sparkling and suspenseful, Fifty Shades Darker is the irresistibly addictive second part of the Fifty Shades trilogy.

Review

The story begins with Anastasia starting her new job at a small publishing firm. She works under Jack Hyde, who is a little too friendly. She spends most of her time crying since she is a total wreck over her break up with Christian. But it doesn’t last too long. Christian is back in her life and eager to rekindle their romance–a real romance this time: dates and all and away from the red room. Ana is all for it.

However, they are far from a their fairy tale love story. They have to workout their differences sexually and personally.

Christian is hesitant to go back into the red room, because he is terrified Ana will leave him again despite her reassurance it won’t happen. Ana is overwhelmed by Christian’s personal demons of being abused, his distaste for being touched and being bossy. One of Christian’s ex subs gone off the deep end. She bought a gun and sneaking around his house and Ana. Then there is Mrs. Robinson who Ana despises and doesn’t want in Christian’s life, but she won’t leave and Christian won’t let her go either. If that wasn’t bad enough, Jack Hyde tries to force her to have sex with him.

Overall the book wasn’t as good as the first one and rated it 3 out of 5 stars.

There were too many things happening at once, distracting me from the story. Some of it was a little unrealistic and felt as if thrown in the story just to spice it up. With that said, I still enjoyed the chemistry between Ana and Christian. If it wasn’t for that part of the story, I wouldn’t have read past chapter 1.

Mind Readers Book Review

9858714

Cameron Winters is a freak. Fortunately, no one but her family knows the truth… that Cameron can read minds. For years Cameron has hidden behind a facade of normalcy, warned that there are those who would do her harm. When gorgeous and mysterious Lewis Douglas arrives he destroys everything Cameron has ever believed and tempts her with possibilities of freedom. Determined to embrace her hidden talents, Cameron heads to a secret haven with Lewis; a place where she meets others like her, Mind Readers.

But as Cameron soon finds out some things are too good to be true. When the Mind Readers realize the extent of Cameron’s abilities, they want to use her powers for their own needs. Cameron suddenly finds herself involved in a war in which her idea of what is right and wrong is greatly tested. In the end she’ll be forced to make a choice that will not only threaten her relationship with Lewis, but her very life.

Review

Similar to my book My Watcher (The Zeuorian Series) Cameron is gifted with the power of telepathy and people are after her, except she isn’t an alien, but a special human. So you can tell why I read the book: a little research and I like these kind of stories.

The story kept you interested from the very start after the coffee shop blows up. I like how she is struggling with trying to stay hidden and using her power to help others.

However I thought it was a little abrupt and unrealistic Cameron abandon her grandmother and to live with a group of other mind readers. But I understand why she chose that path, because her desire to do good won out.

Overall I liked the story and rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Opposition Book Review

Opposition: A Lux Novel BOOK 5

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opposition Cover

Overview

The world changed the night the Luxen came, and now Daemon will do anything to save Katy…even if that means betrayal. For Katy, the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy them all. As it becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world crumbles around them, they may lose everything–even what they cherish most–to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind. War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

My Review

I started to read the series, because a reviewer claimed my book The Zeuorian Awakening was a ripoff of Obsidian and I was curious to see if in fact the author plagiarized my book, which they didn’t. Then I decided to read book 2 and 3. I was going to give up on the series, but I’m a sucker for serials with cliffhangers. So I bought book 4 and 5 to see what happened to Katy.

I really had a hard time getting into this book. The whole alien invasion I had a difficult time with. As well as Daemon and Dawson are the only ones not controlled by the Luxen leader like Dee. Not once did they try to get word to Katy or Bethany of the situation.

Of course Katy does something stupid and gets caught. Her typical. Daemon must risk being considered a traitor and killed to save her, again. Then while surrounded by aliens who want her dead, they have sex. Ah, please. Talk about a filler.

Dawson, Daemon and Katy escape with DOD and Luc’s help. Dee stayed behind. She doesn’t want to feel anymore and likes being a drone. Okay.

Now they are staying with the DOD and helping to fight the aliens. All the while having sex. That was the point I skipped to the end. I had enough.

***spoiler alert***

Just as I suspected everyone survived and the bad aliens were taken care of by the Arum. Daemon and Katy now live together and go to college in Colorado. They are getting married soon. Dee has a beau and Dawson has a kid with Bethany. All is great in the world and they are also free of the DOD.

Only bad that came out of everything is that Katy’s mom died, which was no big deal to Katy or to me. Her character sort of disappeared after book 2 and any feelings for her disappeared as well.

Overview

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back. After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. But the most dangerous foe has been truths are exposed and lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on? And will they even be together?

So I bought this book to see what happened to Katy.

The book was interesting, but I still had a hard time believing the DOD or Dadelus, would kidnap and torture previously human now alien-hybrids. Like I said in my review of Opal, I have my conspiracy theories like many people do, but I also don’t think a secret government group would be stupid and kidnap a person and then ask them to join their cause. They would ask them first so the person doesn’t immediately think they are bad and refuse to help.

I also had an issue with Katy fighting the secret group. It was a little stupid. She knows there is no escaping. They are going to spray her with stuff that makes her suffer if she refuses to cooperate. But she does it when a doctor tries to exam her and take blood.

I was surprised Dee pretty much wrote Katy off. She no longer cared about her. And Dawson after Daemon and Katy risked everything to help him get Bethany free, tried to stop him from saving Katy.

***spoiler alert***

After Luc sprung Daemon and Katy out of area 51, Dee, Dawson, Mathew, Ash and the gang show. They finally decided to try and save them. Of course this is after they graduated high school 4 months later, which they rub into Katy’s and Daemon’s faces. Daemon gets a warm welcome and Katy a so so one. Still the outcast, but Dee finally forgives her for Adams death. Please. It never was her fault in the first place.

Like the other books just when they thought everything was safe another friend turns on them–Mathew. He was the one who sold out Dawson and Bethany. They run for their lives and make a public speculation on TV to keep from getting capture. It still amazes me why that hadn’t happened earlier with so many hybrids escaping the DOD.

The book ends with an alien invasion and Daemon, Dee and Dawson joining them while leaving Katy, Bethany and origins behind.

Yet again I skipped reading half the book to bypass the boring parts and find out what happened at the end.

Fifty Shades Movie Review

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Review

by E.L. James

Fifty Shades Grey Poster

Overview

The worldwide phenomenon comes to life in the Fifty Shades of Grey unrated version, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as the iconic Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

My Review

I read the book series out of curiosity, but I ended up liking the main characters, especially when they bantered back and forth. Personally the sex and bondage thing could’ve been completely removed from the book for all I cared. I skimmed over it. It’s just not my things.

I watched the movie hoping it would be just as good as the book, but sadly it wasn’t. Talk about a waste of six dollars.

The movie skimmed over most of the book, highlighting only certain parts, in some cases skipping important parts. For instance the banter between the two characters. The part that drew me in. They did show a few emails between them, but it wasn’t the same. You didn’t get the whole palm twitching mad joke.

One of the biggest disappointment I felt toward the movie was the character development. In the book you’re able to hear Anastasia’s thoughts so you understand her inner conflict regarding Christian. I.e. He is the first man she ever found interesting, but to be with him she must accept his terms—being whipped and bound. You also are able to see Christian as a person. In the movie all you could see was his cold, distant and perverted side. If I hadn’t read the book, I would’ve wondered if Ana was completely insane to want to be with this extremely cold-hearted guy.

The only good thing the movie did right, they reduced the sex scenes so they were classy and bearable for people like myself, who aren’t into porn. For those of you who are into porn or bondage, sorry. The movie just gives you a glimpse of the red room of pain and Ana getting hit. It sort of reminded me of the old 40’s movies. Where you see a hand clench or the girl gasp, but you don’t see the actual act taking place. You only know it’s happening.

Opal Book Review

Opal: A Lux Novel BOOK 3

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal Covet

Overview

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing alien hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

My Review

I started to read the series, because a reviewer claimed my book The Zeuorian Awakening was a ripoff of Obsidian and I was curious to see if in fact the author plagiarized my book, which they didn’t. Then I decided to read the next book and continued to read the third book despite not liking the second book as much as the first one.

Yeah, I know, I’m a sucker for serials with cliffhangers.

Anyway Opal was a little better than book 2. The story is focused on getting Bethany, Dawson’s girlfriend out of DOD hands with Blake’s help. He is no longer with the DOD and wants to free his alien friend too. He is blackmailing Katy and Daemon into working with him. They agree only if he helps to get Bethany out too. Of course the plan doesn’t go smooth and Blake turns on Katy again.

Katy wasn’t as stupid in this book and she actually thought of something smart to handle Dawson. However I thought it was a little ridiculous Katy took complete responsibility for Adam, Dee’s boyfriend, death when she tried to stop Blake, but she couldn’t.

Even though the book was better than Onyx, I found myself getting bored halfway through the book. I ended up skipping to the end so I could find out what happened instead of reading the second half of the book.

I also had a hard time believing the DOD would kidnap and torture previously human now alien-hybrids. I have my conspiracy theories about them like many people do, but I also don’t think they’re stupid and force people to join their cause. Something like that will leak out. And they would talk to the new hybrid’s first. Win their trust. It’s easier to work together when they cooperate than force them. It’s also easier to keep the whole alien thing under wraps too. No fear of a previous captive spilling to the news.
