The Infinite Sea Book Review

The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2)

Book Overview

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Book Review

The book picks up where the first ends. Cassie and the others are holed up in a hotel close to the late Camp Haven. Evan is still MIA and believed dead. But Cassie doesn’t give up hope on him. Ben is badly injured so they can’t travel. So Ringer goes off on her own to locate a better place to hide.

Quickly it turns bad. Teacup follows her and she shoots the poor girl. They are captured and taken to a new Camp Haven while Evan claws his way to Cassie, losing his upgrades in the process. One of the Others, Grace, follows him and leads the Others to them.

Most of the book follows Ringers story at the camp with her being physically upgraded like the others so they can use her as a spy to find Evan.

I gave it 2 stars.

I wasn’t pulled into this story as the previous one. I found myself skimming to get through some of the constant monologing. At some points I thought the character Ringer’s story mimicked Cassie’s in book 1. When the story ended I felt as if the it had been cut off not in a good suspenseful way. Rather big important chunks left out of the story. Specially Evan and why the others are slowly killing humans instead of just wiping them out.

Alien apocalyptic: 5th Wave Book Review

Okay so I’m a little behind in my reading. I finally finished reading…

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave #1)

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Book Review

It’s start with 16 year old Cassie living alone in the woods by herself after the 4th alien attack (wave) hit earth. Over 7 billion people are dead. The survivors are scattered around the world. She is one of them. She stays hidden or risks being killed by the Others, which she isn’t sure who they are. They’re supposed to look just like humans. So she trusts no one, especially the military who killed her father and tried to kill her.

She decides to leave the forest and go save her 5 year old brother, Sam, from the military who took him. In the process she is shot and rescued by one of the Others. This is where the story parallels Twilight in a way. Her hunter, Evan,  young, hot, very strong and fast. Despite his mission to kill humans, saves Cassie, because he fallen for her.

But if you’re looking for a slow love story between them, you’re out of luck. The book skips around to other point of views so you get a sense of whats happening in the world beside Cassie holed up in a cabin with Evan.

I give it 4 stars.

I felt the characterization of Cassie and Ben were good and kept me interested, although neither of them have unique voices. They sound the same. Sam sounded too old for a five year old. My son is four, he hangs out with my neighbors son who is 5. They take him hunting on the weekends, but even so, I couldn’t imagine him thinking, let alone acting as mature as Sam. He sounded closer to 7 or 8. And whats up with all the girls wanting to slap the guys. (My personal pet peeve stereotyping girls as being girly girls.) I hate to break it to you Rick, but not all girls resort to sissy slapping when they get frustrated and mad at a guy. Some punch, some just roll their eyes and walk away and the list goes on.  (just to the  name a few responses).

If you like reading sci-fi’s or post apocalypse stories, this book is worth reading.

Evangeline (A Dark Faerie Tale, #0.5)

by Alexia Purdy

Book Overview

The Land of Faerie is calling.
There are places unknown, magic lures you in and love spans lifetimes.
Don’t resist. It’s in the blood…

Evangeline is a short story prequel to Ever Shade.

Book Review

I came across this book on Amazon Free Fantasy stories. I decided to give it a try, being it was a short story and I didn’t have to commit too much of my time before deciding whether or not I want to read the series. Sadly my first impression wasn’t that good, because:

The story was written in third person omniscient, which I’m not a huge fan of reading. It can become difficult to follow. Evangeline was no exception. The author didn’t have any transitions between the two POV’s Evangeline and her sister, Jade. She switched POV mid-paragraphs. So most of the time I had to re-read paragraphs to figure out who was speaking, taking me out of the story.

Next, the first couple of chapters the author spent a lot of time narrating and explaining backstory about the sisters and their powers instead of letting it unfold naturally with the story. However, she left off the most important part–character development.

The sisters characters were flat and hard to connect too. They had no personality. No unique characteristics. I didn’t even really know what they looked like, except Evangeline had black hair and brown eyes.

If that wasn’t bad enough, just as I finally felt the story was getting interesting when Evangeline met Jack, the story fast forwards to her leaving Jade to spend time with him, whom she had been dating for awhile and loved. Then the next chapter jumped again where she was living in Faerie Land.

I gave it 2 stars.

Despite my issue with third person omniscient, narrating backstory and flat characters, it had a potential. If the author had written in the interactions between Jack and Evangeline as well as Jade and the fairy king the story and the characters could’ve became interesting. However it didn’t.  It felt rushed and confusing instead.

Perhaps if you were reading the story, after have read book 1 it may have been more interesting. But starting with this book only turns you off from the series as it did with me.

Reminder: Today is the last day to download The Zeuorian Awakening Free on Amazon Kindle.

Fifty Shades Darker Review

I figure with the pending release of Fifty Shades Darker movie February 2017, I would finally read the book. I bought it after reading the first one, but it didn’t grab me right away so I put it down.

Official Book Overview

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven, and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront her anger and envy of the women who came before her and make the most important decision of her life.

Erotic, sparkling and suspenseful, Fifty Shades Darker is the irresistibly addictive second part of the Fifty Shades trilogy.

Review

The story begins with Anastasia starting her new job at a small publishing firm. She works under Jack Hyde, who is a little too friendly. She spends most of her time crying since she is a total wreck over her break up with Christian. But it doesn’t last too long. Christian is back in her life and eager to rekindle their romance–a real romance this time: dates and all and away from the red room. Ana is all for it.

However, they are far from a their fairy tale love story. They have to workout their differences sexually and personally.

Christian is hesitant to go back into the red room, because he is terrified Ana will leave him again despite her reassurance it won’t happen. Ana is overwhelmed by Christian’s personal demons of being abused, his distaste for being touched and being bossy. One of Christian’s ex subs gone off the deep end. She bought a gun and sneaking around his house and Ana. Then there is Mrs. Robinson who Ana despises and doesn’t want in Christian’s life, but she won’t leave and Christian won’t let her go either. If that wasn’t bad enough, Jack Hyde tries to force her to have sex with him.

Overall the book wasn’t as good as the first one and rated it 3 out of 5 stars.

There were too many things happening at once, distracting me from the story. Some of it was a little unrealistic and felt as if thrown in the story just to spice it up. With that said, I still enjoyed the chemistry between Ana and Christian. If it wasn’t for that part of the story, I wouldn’t have read past chapter 1.

Mind Readers Book Review

9858714

Cameron Winters is a freak. Fortunately, no one but her family knows the truth… that Cameron can read minds. For years Cameron has hidden behind a facade of normalcy, warned that there are those who would do her harm. When gorgeous and mysterious Lewis Douglas arrives he destroys everything Cameron has ever believed and tempts her with possibilities of freedom. Determined to embrace her hidden talents, Cameron heads to a secret haven with Lewis; a place where she meets others like her, Mind Readers.

But as Cameron soon finds out some things are too good to be true. When the Mind Readers realize the extent of Cameron’s abilities, they want to use her powers for their own needs. Cameron suddenly finds herself involved in a war in which her idea of what is right and wrong is greatly tested. In the end she’ll be forced to make a choice that will not only threaten her relationship with Lewis, but her very life.

Review

Similar to my book My Watcher (The Zeuorian Series) Cameron is gifted with the power of telepathy and people are after her, except she isn’t an alien, but a special human. So you can tell why I read the book: a little research and I like these kind of stories.

The story kept you interested from the very start after the coffee shop blows up. I like how she is struggling with trying to stay hidden and using her power to help others.

However I thought it was a little abrupt and unrealistic Cameron abandon her grandmother and to live with a group of other mind readers. But I understand why she chose that path, because her desire to do good won out.

Overall I liked the story and rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Opposition Book Review

Opposition: A Lux Novel BOOK 5

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opposition Cover

Overview

The world changed the night the Luxen came, and now Daemon will do anything to save Katy…even if that means betrayal. For Katy, the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy them all. As it becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world crumbles around them, they may lose everything–even what they cherish most–to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind. War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

My Review

I started to read the series, because a reviewer claimed my book The Zeuorian Awakening was a ripoff of Obsidian and I was curious to see if in fact the author plagiarized my book, which they didn’t. Then I decided to read book 2 and 3. I was going to give up on the series, but I’m a sucker for serials with cliffhangers. So I bought book 4 and 5 to see what happened to Katy.

I really had a hard time getting into this book. The whole alien invasion I had a difficult time with. As well as Daemon and Dawson are the only ones not controlled by the Luxen leader like Dee. Not once did they try to get word to Katy or Bethany of the situation.

Of course Katy does something stupid and gets caught. Her typical. Daemon must risk being considered a traitor and killed to save her, again. Then while surrounded by aliens who want her dead, they have sex. Ah, please. Talk about a filler.

Dawson, Daemon and Katy escape with DOD and Luc’s help. Dee stayed behind. She doesn’t want to feel anymore and likes being a drone. Okay.

Now they are staying with the DOD and helping to fight the aliens. All the while having sex. That was the point I skipped to the end. I had enough.

***spoiler alert***

Just as I suspected everyone survived and the bad aliens were taken care of by the Arum. Daemon and Katy now live together and go to college in Colorado. They are getting married soon. Dee has a beau and Dawson has a kid with Bethany. All is great in the world and they are also free of the DOD.

Only bad that came out of everything is that Katy’s mom died, which was no big deal to Katy or to me. Her character sort of disappeared after book 2 and any feelings for her disappeared as well.

Overview

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back. After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. But the most dangerous foe has been truths are exposed and lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on? And will they even be together?

So I bought this book to see what happened to Katy.

The book was interesting, but I still had a hard time believing the DOD or Dadelus, would kidnap and torture previously human now alien-hybrids. Like I said in my review of Opal, I have my conspiracy theories like many people do, but I also don’t think a secret government group would be stupid and kidnap a person and then ask them to join their cause. They would ask them first so the person doesn’t immediately think they are bad and refuse to help.

I also had an issue with Katy fighting the secret group. It was a little stupid. She knows there is no escaping. They are going to spray her with stuff that makes her suffer if she refuses to cooperate. But she does it when a doctor tries to exam her and take blood.

I was surprised Dee pretty much wrote Katy off. She no longer cared about her. And Dawson after Daemon and Katy risked everything to help him get Bethany free, tried to stop him from saving Katy.

***spoiler alert***

After Luc sprung Daemon and Katy out of area 51, Dee, Dawson, Mathew, Ash and the gang show. They finally decided to try and save them. Of course this is after they graduated high school 4 months later, which they rub into Katy’s and Daemon’s faces. Daemon gets a warm welcome and Katy a so so one. Still the outcast, but Dee finally forgives her for Adams death. Please. It never was her fault in the first place.

Like the other books just when they thought everything was safe another friend turns on them–Mathew. He was the one who sold out Dawson and Bethany. They run for their lives and make a public speculation on TV to keep from getting capture. It still amazes me why that hadn’t happened earlier with so many hybrids escaping the DOD.

The book ends with an alien invasion and Daemon, Dee and Dawson joining them while leaving Katy, Bethany and origins behind.

Yet again I skipped reading half the book to bypass the boring parts and find out what happened at the end.

Opal Book Review

Opal: A Lux Novel BOOK 3

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal Covet

Overview

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing alien hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

My Review

I started to read the series, because a reviewer claimed my book The Zeuorian Awakening was a ripoff of Obsidian and I was curious to see if in fact the author plagiarized my book, which they didn’t. Then I decided to read the next book and continued to read the third book despite not liking the second book as much as the first one.

Yeah, I know, I’m a sucker for serials with cliffhangers.

Anyway Opal was a little better than book 2. The story is focused on getting Bethany, Dawson’s girlfriend out of DOD hands with Blake’s help. He is no longer with the DOD and wants to free his alien friend too. He is blackmailing Katy and Daemon into working with him. They agree only if he helps to get Bethany out too. Of course the plan doesn’t go smooth and Blake turns on Katy again.

Katy wasn’t as stupid in this book and she actually thought of something smart to handle Dawson. However I thought it was a little ridiculous Katy took complete responsibility for Adam, Dee’s boyfriend, death when she tried to stop Blake, but she couldn’t.

Even though the book was better than Onyx, I found myself getting bored halfway through the book. I ended up skipping to the end so I could find out what happened instead of reading the second half of the book.

I also had a hard time believing the DOD would kidnap and torture previously human now alien-hybrids. I have my conspiracy theories about them like many people do, but I also don’t think they’re stupid and force people to join their cause. Something like that will leak out. And they would talk to the new hybrid’s first. Win their trust. It’s easier to work together when they cooperate than force them. It’s also easier to keep the whole alien thing under wraps too. No fear of a previous captive spilling to the news.

Onyx Book Review

Onyx: A Lux Novel Book 2 Review

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Onyx Covet

Overview

Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizzaro alien connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems. I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them–me.

My Review

I started to read this series, because a reviewer claimed my book The Zeuorian Awakening was a ripoff of Obsidian and I was curious to see if in fact the author plagiarized my book, which they didn’t. Then I decided to read the next book since I liked the first one and I’m a sucker for serials with cliffhangers. I also wanted to research how other YA authors wrote scenes where a character is learning to control their powers for my novelette, Control.

Even though the second book was more original and didn’t follow Twilight like Obsidian, it wasn’t as good. I found myself skimming and wanting to slap Katy for being stupid.

And the first half of the book Katy kept refusing to accept Daemon really liked her and that it was a product of their alien connection. It didn’t matter how many times he tried to prove otherwise and apologize for being mean to her, she refused to believe he liked her–being bullheaded and stubborn as usual. At first I had no issue with Katy pushing him away, but it got old really quickly.

***spoiler alert***

Next enter Blake a new possible love interest. He immediately goes after Katy, making Daemon jealous and suspicious. Katy jumps to date him since he’s normal unlike Daemon.

The DOD appear questioning about the fight in the woods when Katy killed the Arum. Daemon is claiming he did it. They are hiding their connection from the other aliens.

Katy gets sick and develops powers from her connection to Daemon and causes a few incidents. She discovers Blake has powers too and is like her–an alien hybrid. Daemon made her one when he healed her. Blake warns she must hide what she is since the DOD want her kind. They want to use them. Daemon doesn’t want her to tell Dee and Katy agrees. The beginning of end of their relationship.

Blake offers to train Katy. Daemon warns her not to train with Blake since something is off with him. But as always she ignores his warnings even when Blake threw a knife at her and set her up to fight an Arum by making a phone call to someone. She also blows off Dee, her blog and other friends in the process.

Then Katy spot Bethany, Daemon’s missing twin brother’s girlfriend who was supposed to be dead. She tells Daemon. He doesn’t want her to tell Dee about it. Another lie. They follow the DOD trying to find her and his brother, Dawson.
Low and behold Daemon was right about Blake. He is working with the DOD under duress and throws Katy under the bus. He kills Dee’s boyfriend in the process. Everything goes downhill from there.

Obsidian

Obsidian Comparison to Awakening and Review

Obsidian (A Lux Novel Book 1)
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
published May 2012 by Entangled Publushing, LLC.

Obsidian

I purchased Obsidian after I received a review on Goodreads for The Zeuorian Awakening. The reviewer wrote “This book is a ripoff of Obsidian, but not a good one. *sigh*” I never read the book and Awakening was first published under Untamed Powers May 2012, but I was pushing it to agents starting 2009. So of course I was curious if it was actually a rip off of mine.
I had many work stolen in my lifetime and wouldn’t be surprised if it had happened. After I read the overview on Amazon, I decided to buy it since there were similarities between my book and Obsidian.

However after reading the book, I can safely say there is only a small similarity between our books.

Zeuorian Awakening is a fantasy mystery / thriller with a romantic subplot. The story is fast pace, thriller style writing about a teenage girl, Lexi. She was born with the abilities to read minds and sense premonitions. When she was 14 a man tried to kill her after he discovered she could read their mind. (see short story Monster). Her parents died in a car accident on her fifteenth birthday, she forgot the day they died and the summer prior to it.

She moved in with her single aunt, an emergency doctor. On her seventh birthday she glows and physically transforms into a major hottie. Boys are chasing her, because of her change. She starts developing powers (telekinesis and atomkinesis) that she’s unable to control and causes incidents. A mysterious boy is following her. He knows all about her powers and why others are after her. He could be one of the boys who likes her. She believes the reason why she’s changing and the identity of the mysterious boy is hidden in her forgotten memories the summer her parents had died.

Obsidian on the other hand is a romantic fantasy about Katy and Daemon. She moved to West Virginia with her mom three years after her dad died from brain cancer. Her mom works all the time as a nurse while Katy blogs and reads. She’s a loner and doesn’t have any friends from Florida where she grew up. So no emails or phone calls to friends. Her mom encourages Katy to make friends with her neighbors who are same age as her. She meets Daemon. He’s rude and they hate each other instantly, but of course, he’s really hot with black hair and green eyes. Katy lusts after him despite he’s a dick.

Then Dee, Daemon’s sister, befriends Katy. Daemon is overprotective of Dee and doesn’t want Katy to be friends with her. He thinks Katy isn’t good enough to be friends with his sister or the right kind of person. Dee doesn’t think the same as her brother. So Dee takes Daemon’s car keys and forces him to get to know Katy as a way to earn his keys back. From there Katy’s and Daemon’s attraction buds toward each other. Even though he continues to be a jerk to her, running hot and cold, he saves her life several times. None of which would’ve happened if she didn’t stupidly put herself in danger in the first place and listened to others warnings.

Spoiler Alert

Katy discovers Daemon and Dee are aliens from Lux. They are made of light and have powers to alter light, start fires, morph, move fast, super strength and heal. (I never caught whether or not they also control the weather, but it would change around them at times.) They came to earth with others like them after their planet was destroyed. Another group of aliens are now hunting them throughout the galaxy, because they are mortal enemies and want to steal their powers. Any time the Luxen use their powers around a human it leaves a trace making them glow, which Arum are able to see. They use it to track the Luxen. However special crystals in the mountains obscure the Luxen. So the Arum must torture their location out of the human. Since Katy is in constant need of Daemon’s help being the cliché pathetic helpless girl, she becomes a target of the Arum. She is attacked about three times in the book, because of it.

I wouldn’t category this book as thrilling. 80% of the book was the love story with two action sequences in act 2 and one final fight at the end. Even though this is a romance, Katy and Daemon don’t end up together. She won’t settle for a jerk. (finally one smart move on her part). Honestly, I never liked Daemon’s character that much either. The banter between them kept me reading, but there was no shedding of his hot and cold attitude like Twilight after Bella discovered Edward was a vampire. He remained a jerk until the end.

The only similarities I saw between both books is that:

Both Katy and Lexi are a little naive. However Lexi relies on her telepathy and premonitions too much for determining if others are being honest, which gets her in trouble. Katy lets her stubbornness allow her to make bad decisions on impulse and she questions if she’s crazy when she sees Dee or Daemon do not normal things since her dad’s brain cancer made him hallucinate.

Both Daemon and Lexi were aliens being hunted. But Lexi is being hunted by The Community, a group of half-breeds (half human and half-Zeuorian). The half-breeds were run off their planet Valos by an evil Zeuorian queen, supposedly the last of her kind until Lexi was brought to earth. Another mystery. The half-breeds believe she’ll turn evil like her ancestors, in particular the queen.

Both Lexi and Daemon are aliens and gorgeous with green eyes. That’s where the differences from them stop. Daemon uses a nasty personality to push humans away and he looks down on them. Lexi is nice. She tries to keep to herself and avoid hurting others with her powers. She struggles with the idea maybe she is turning into a monster and wants to hide. But the boys chasing Lexi over her new appearance and the mysterious boy (Watcher) following her stops her from finding a hole and hiding out. And she also wants to figure out who could be he Watcher, which requires her talking to the boys.

Both Lexi and Katy live in a small town with mountains and lakes where they can hike. They both live with a single parent who works in the medical industry for long hours. Except Lexi’s aunt is being intentionally pulled away to keep Lexi alone, while Katy’s mom chooses to work instead of spend time with her. Lexi and Katy use some of the same dialogue (freaking alien, ET, NASCAR, etc.)

Both Lexi and Daemon can change the weather when they are upset, but I didn’t catch why Daemon changes the weather. He has the power of light not atomkinesis.

The lead love interests Daemon and Tyler had black hair, beautiful eyes, muscular, hot, arrogant and overly confident. But Tyler was popular, well liked, put up a good front as a way to hide his true self. He is a good liar and does things that make Lexi question if he is her Watcher and knows the truth about her, which he claims he does. Another mystery that will be explained further in book 2.

That’s all the similarities.

Despite the reason I decided to read Osidian, it was still a good read. I would recommend others to read it. But I only gave it 3 stars since the story was a little slow and cliché to me. The female lead meets the hot moody boy who they instantly rub each other raw. Only to discover he is attracted to her, but he is trying to push her away to hide his secret. She is the first girl he really cares about. And since this was a romance, I expected the love interest to swoon me like Edward did in Twilight, but he never did. He remained a jerk. Maybe that will change in the next book, hopefully.

RATE 3 stars
