What’s up with all the movie remakes, seriously?

I just watched the remake of Poltergeist, not by choice. I was pinned down by a sick 4 year old and couldn’t change the channel.

I have four words to say about it.

What a Let Down.

I saw the original movie during a pre screening when I was 12. They didn’t advertised the movie. I had no clue what it was about, but someone gave me a free pass in the mall and I had nothing better to do.

I have to say, I loved it. I brought my family back to the theater to watch it as well as my friends. So did all the others who got to see it for free. After that the movie went viral. Which meant a lot back in the pre-internet and twitter days. Just from the word of mouth,  the movie became an instant success over night.

Then they disgraced the movie by making a terrible remake of it. I swear in some scenes you can tell the actors were awestruck they were in the remake of such a legendary movie or just having fun instead of acting serious.

Which brings me to the point of this post, what’s up with remaking great movies and badly I like to add?

Poltergeist is just one in many remakes in the past couple of years. I have to admit, I try not to watch them, because I already know they won’t ever live up to the original just from the commercial and track record. I can’t recall a single one doing good in the book office. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

Are they resorting to remakes because original movie ideas have dried up? I think not. My friend a screen writer mentions daily, there are tons of movie scripts from budding artist they can pick from.

Are they trying to appeal to the adults who were kids when the original movie came out hoping they rush to watch it. Possibly. It is well known movie studios aren’t willing to take chances with no name movie ideas. They want something with a built-in audience such as popular book series, comic book heroes or TV shows (Star trek). However, if that is the case, why do they keep making rotten tomato remakes that bomb in the box offices and never recoup production costs. (Maybe a tax write off?)

Personally I think the studios are the ones without ideas. Everything is changing with personal surround sounds, 4K, HD, video on demand, Netflix, Amazon, etc… People don’t need to go to a theater to watch movies. They can do it at home.

But the movie studios are stuck in the 80’s old way of thinking.  Lets make a block buster so we can entice people to pay the high price movie ticket and earn larger profits. However, if they were smart about it, which they aren’t, they can use streaming videos to their advantage. How about watching Star Wars on demand the day it comes out. I’d pay 10 maybe even 20 dollars to see that instead of dealing with finding a babysitter and annoying people talking during the movie.

Yeah, yeah I know. What about piracy? Its psychology 101. People are inevitably lazy. They aren’t going to want to spend hours downloading a badly recorded pirated version when they can easily watch the original for a reasonable price.

Okay, but what about the movie theaters? This will kill them. Not necessarily. There are still the people who like to see movies on the big screen. If they make it a better experience than at home, then they can actually increase sales, such as offer daycare. booth style stadium seating (think Las Vegas), maybe offer dinners they can eat before watching the movie. I go to a movie like that, even to see an old movie. The ultimate casual date night.

What do you think?

Difference between My Watcher and Awakening

If you have been following the Zeuorian Series, you probably noticed I just released two free short stories and My Watcher while Awakening has been pulled from the online book stores.

As part of the up coming launch of the next book Control this fall, I’m offering prequel free short stories and an extended version of Awakening (book 1) to re-spark interest in the series, because it has been a while since the first book has been launched. (Sorry life got in the way. The past year I’ve been sick and so has my 3 year-old son. I swear getting old sucks.)

The Short Stories
Lexi Greene’s Dangerous Lesson and Grim Awakening are the two combined stories in Monster broken out into their own books. (Actually Dangerous Lesson had been published prior to Monster and pulled from the stores for a limited time.)

In addition to those two free stories there will be several other free prequel short stories being posted in the next month. The stories will lead up to book 1 with short scenes from other characters (i.e. Tyler, Everett and others) in the book. However, none of the scenes will spill as to who is her real Watcher, which was still up in the air at the end of book 1 (intentionally).

Upcoming Short Stories Teaser:

Its seems danger is everywhere Lexi discovered after being forced to attend high school, but is it random or because they believe she is a monster for having telepathy.

Awakening Extended Version (My Watcher)

If you read book 1, you are probably wondering what has changed in the book and do I need to buy it?

Well if you don’t have the time or money to pay 2.99, you can skip buying this book and won’t be lost reading Control. For one I plan on briefly explaining story facts in the next book to bring new readers up to speed, if by chance they buy it before My Watcher. (And yes it happens.) However several new scenes have been added to the book and facts that will be referenced throughout the series that might be worth reading. But if you’re not sure, here is a brief list of what had been added to the story:

  • Scenes to explain further Zeuorian history and Lexi’s powers.
  • Scenes to deepen the love story
  • Scenes to deepen secondary characters and give them more backstory as well as make them sound unique and not cliche or flat.
  • Scenes to deepen Angie’s love interest.
  • Final scene with Tyler and his father to introduce his character for Book Hunted and explain in detail Tyler’s actions in book Control.

If you decide to buy the next book great. It will be released on April 8th. You can preorder here:

Update 4/5/16

Awakening will be exclusively available on Amazon Kindle for those of you who want to read the shorter version.

Control Update

Hey to all you Zeuorian fans,

Control is written and done. I had a couple of beta readers look over it and like what they read with exception of a few issues they pointed out.

Anyway, you’re going to enjoy the new story twists in regards with Tyler , which will lead into the next book Hunted. For you die hard romantics who didn’t feel I spent enough time on Lexi’s and Everett’s romance, this book is truly the beginning of their relationship. You’ll get to see Lexi’s feelings grow stronger toward Everett and get to know Everett even better.

Book 1 Awakening, was never intended to be a typical romance per se where boy meets girl and they fall for each other, but something keeps them apart until the end. Rather it was Lexi’s journey from being closed off and reluctant to even talk to anyone other than Angie to opening up, making friends and finally accepting to date someone. Although, I found some of the Goodreads reviews about her falling for every guy and kissing them quite interesting, especially since I didn’t write the story that way.

Separate news, I’m working on Her Watcher (the extended version of Awakening) where you get to see Scott’s POV of Awakening. Definitely a more romantic suspense compared to Awakening, which is a thriller. In the story you get to see what really happened behind Lexi’s back. As well as the other side of Tyler, The Community, Everett and his past with Lexi.

Well that’s all for now.

Vultures

“I see the vultures are gathering and watching a death of another relationship.” Lexi leaned against the locker and stared at a group of boys and girls gathering around Tyler and Gina. “They’re circling around them, waiting for who’ll be dumped before stepping in and picking their carcass apart bit by bit with vicious rumors.”

One of Dillon’s eyebrows lifted up and he gazed down at Lexi. “So . . . you’ve been watching horror movies again?”

Danger

Stalked Photo
Stalked Photo

We blindly walk through life unaware of the danger lurking around us. Where the closest danger comes to us is through the television set when a news reporter announces the death of a poor soul by the hands of another, but it only takes one incident to make someone aware of the danger surrounding them. That incident, Lexi shivered, happened to her when she was fourteen years old.
